Why companies switch from Acumatica, and why many stay
There is no independent survey of why companies leave Acumatica. There are five structural reasons a review makes sense, each traceable to a public source, and several good reasons not to move.

Search for reasons to leave Acumatica and most of what appears is written by competitors or their resellers. We found no independent, published survey of why Acumatica customers switch. What can be documented are the structural reasons a review makes sense in 2026, and the equally documented reasons to stay.
Five reasons a review makes sense
The owner changed
Acumatica agreed on May 29, 2025 to be acquired by Vista Equity Partners from EQT, and its chief executive said the investment would help power the company's AI-first product strategy1. An Acumatica blog post from July 2026 describes the deal as closed and reports that Acumatica is working with Vista's internal "Agentic Factory" team on what to build2.
A change of owner is not a problem in itself. It is a reasonable moment to ask for the roadmap, the renewal terms and any changes to partner arrangements in writing, before the next renewal rather than at it.
Pricing follows volume, not people
Acumatica does not sell user seats. It prices by the applications a company uses, by expected transaction volumes and resources, and by the licence and deployment option chosen. Resource levels and data storage are adjusted as transactions grow3.
For a company that adds people faster than transactions, this model is an advantage. For one whose order volume grows faster than its headcount, the cost can rise without a single new user. Neither outcome is visible from the outside, because Acumatica does not publish prices; its pricing page routes buyers to a custom review.
The experience depends on the partner
Acumatica is sold exclusively through partners, with more than 350 value-added resellers4. The partner usually quotes, implements, supports and explains the cost differences between licence options3. When a customer is unhappy, the cause is often the partner relationship rather than the software, and the first alternative to consider may be a different Acumatica partner rather than a different ERP.
Fit at the edges of an edition
Acumatica's six standard editions share a common core and differ in their industry modules5. Companies sometimes outgrow one edge of that design. A make-to-order manufacturer may want MES and advanced planning built for discrete production, which is Epicor Kinetic's specialism6. A finance team running many entities may want a dedicated financial system, which is Sage Intacct's7. A group with many subsidiaries may want NetSuite's single multi-entity suite8.
AI that stops at the edge of the ERP
Acumatica's AI is substantial and growing. The 2026 R2 release lets companies build agents that take defined actions on eligible records, adds an assistant for plain-language questions and offers read-only access for external AI tools through MCP servers. Acumatica says workflows for processes such as the financial close are in development, and its AI page does not explain how AI-unit consumption is priced9.
What these agents do not reach is the work that has no ERP record yet: the supplier's email, the customer's call, the voicemail order. That gap is the reason some companies look not at another ERP but at a layer beside it, such as OpenLazarus, whose AI teammates each have an inbox and a phone number10.
Reasons to stay
What an alternative has to match
- No per-seat charge. Business Central, Odoo and NetSuite all license by user11128.
- A broad standard core. Every edition includes core financials, CRM, mobile apps, workflow and reporting5.
- Hosting choice. A private-cloud subscription lets the customer choose where the software and data reside and when updates apply5.
- An active AI roadmap. Agents, an assistant, document recognition for vendor invoices and MCP access arrived in 2026 R29.
Matching the reason to the response
| Reason for the review | What to check first | Options that address it |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership change | Roadmap and renewal terms in writing | Stay, with commitments; or any ERP below |
| Volume-driven cost | Your resource tier and its growth over three years | Business Central, Odoo (per user, published) |
| Partner relationship | Whether another Acumatica partner fixes it | A new partner before a new ERP |
| Edition fit | Which module is missing, and how often it matters | Epicor Kinetic, NetSuite, Sage Intacct |
| AI scope | Which work happens outside the ERP today | OpenLazarus beside the ERP |
How to run the review
- Name the reason in one sentence. If it is "the partner", the answer is probably not a migration.
- Ask Acumatica and your partner for written answers on roadmap, renewal pricing and the resource tier you will need in three years.
- Measure the work outside the ERP. Count orders, supplier emails and customer calls that are re-keyed by hand each week. That number decides whether an AI layer is worth piloting.
- Shortlist no more than three alternatives from the main comparison, including the option to stay.
- Price each one on your own user mix, using the method in the pricing guide.
A good review ends in one of three decisions, each defensible on paper: stay with clearer terms, add a layer for the work outside the ERP, or migrate with a scoped plan. All three are better than a renewal signed by default.
Questions buyers ask
Why do companies leave Acumatica?
We found no independent survey of Acumatica churn. The documented triggers for a review are the 2025 change of ownership to Vista Equity Partners, a pricing model that tracks applications and transaction volume, dependence on a reseller partner, gaps at the edges of its industry editions, and AI that so far works mainly on records inside the ERP.
Is Acumatica still a good ERP?
For many mid-sized distributors, manufacturers and contractors it remains a strong fit. It does not charge per user seat, every edition includes core financials, CRM and reporting, it can run in Acumatica's cloud or a private cloud of the customer's choosing, and its 2026 R2 release added AI agents and an assistant.
Will the Vista acquisition change Acumatica?
Nobody outside the companies can say. Acumatica's CEO said Vista's investment would help power an AI-first product strategy, and a Vista operating director advised focusing AI on accounts payable, the financial close and demand planning. Customers should ask their partner for the roadmap and renewal terms in writing.
